Albania itinerary mistakes: make your route workable
Count nights and real journeys before booking rooms. Check regions, arrival days, final connections and the return to your departure airport.
At a glance
- Count first
- Nights and full days, not just holiday dates.
- Remove first
- An extra region without a useful day to stay.
- Confirm first
- Final approaches, returns and seasonal connections.

Treating a flight day as a full sightseeing day
Write landing, luggage collection and the departure flight as separate tasks. A late-arrival day is not also a museum day in another town. An early flight can require a final overnight stop in Tirana or near the airport.
Then count nights. Seven calendar days with departure on day seven usually give six nights to allocate. Changing hotels every night does not create six full days to explore six places: the journeys use the same hours.
Adding too many regions to a short trip
Start with your main purpose: historic towns, the coast or a mountain stay. Then compare the detour required for another region. Our first-time city-week suggestion uses Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër; a coast-focused week can have fewer inland stops.
Do not add Theth only because it appears on a highlights list. A mountain stay needs its own transport, nights and an alternative for unsuitable conditions. Make room by removing something else, or save that region for another visit.
Turn a crowded map into usable days
| If the plan does this | Change this |
|---|---|
| One night in every place | Remove a base to create a full day somewhere |
| A ferry meets a flight without a margin | Investigate an earlier connection or overnight stop |
| Another hotel for every beach | Choose a coastal base and compare day outings |
| A bus reaches the town, so the journey is finished | Plan the stop-to-room connection |
| A long drive ends just before the flight | Move the final night towards your departure point |
Forgetting the final approach and return
Confirm departure and arrival points with the operator. A town name does not mean the bus stops at your hotel. The airport publishes different bus services: choose the one matching your next step and verify current operating details.
Work through the return from day trips too. This applies to a beach outside town, a walk ending in another valley and a boat outing with a fixed return. Collecting luggage or returning to a parked car can add another movement.
Booking every room before checking the route
Place the vulnerable connections together first: late arrival, ferry, mountain transfer and early flight. Book the surrounding rooms with conditions matching those dependencies. Use the 7-, 10- and 14-day routes as starting plans rather than compulsory programmes.
For every overnight stay, explain what you will actually do that day and how you reach the next place. If that is hard to describe, remove a stop or add a night before paying.
