A week is enough for two towns, not the whole country
The route below is built around two full days on the ground: one in Berat and one in Gjirokastër. Arrival, three moves between bases and departure occupy the rest. That is why the route contains fewer stops than a list of Albania’s major attractions. You still get two contrasting historic towns, plus time in the capital at either end.
This is our suggested allocation, not a scheduled tour. If you have seven full days after arriving, you have more time than this version assumes. Add the extra night to a place you want to explore rather than silently changing the flight-day calculation.
Berat first, Gjirokastër second
Both old towns form part of the same UNESCO World Heritage property, but they are separate destinations. The route gives each two nights so you can see more than its most photographed view. In Berat, divide your attention between Mangalem, Gorica and the castle quarter. In Gjirokastër, plan a castle visit and choose a historic house rather than attempting every museum.
Do the most demanding uphill sightseeing before you are tired. A hotel with a memorable view may also leave you carrying a suitcase up steps; ask for the actual drop-off point before paying. If mobility is a concern, request entrance and bathroom details directly from the property instead of assuming an old-town address is convenient.

Arrange the awkward connection before the easy ones
For a bus version, check the Berat–Gjirokastër journey first: the service you can actually use determines when you need to leave your accommodation. Then work backwards to the Tirana–Berat leg. A journey planner result is only useful if its terminal and travel date match yours; save the departure point and ask how far it is from your hotel.
By car, use the transfer days for the transfer itself. A lunch stop is compatible with this plan; adding a canyon excursion or another hill town changes the day substantially. Confirm parking at both historic-town stays and keep museum tickets flexible until your arrival time is clearer.
How the final night changes the trip
Day 6 returns to Tirana. Choose a city hotel for a final dinner and a later flight, or an airport-area stay when the following morning starts very early. Check the transfer arrangement with that hotel: being described as “near the airport” does not confirm a walkable entrance or an included shuttle.
A late flight on day 7 may leave room for a city walk. Treat that as spare time, not a reason to add another destination. The separate airport-transfer guide explains the city shuttle and the connection to the intercity terminal.
If you came for the sea or the mountains
For a beach-led week, replace both historic towns with four nights in Himarë between the first and final Tirana nights. You gain three unbroken coast days and avoid treating the beach as a short stop after a long drive. You lose the two-town heritage comparison.
For a northern week, use one night in Tirana, one in Shkodër, three in Theth and one back in Tirana. This is a valley-based stay with a return transfer, not the Theth–Valbona crossing. Confirm suitable walking conditions and the mountain transfer before committing to the nights. These alternatives have the same six-night total, but they answer different reasons for travelling.
Book the stays as one connected sequence
Check cancellation deadlines together. A flexible room in Tirana does not protect a non-refundable booking further south if your arrival changes. Keep the first evening free, confirm how late each accommodation will receive you and save the contact details offline.
For the historic towns, compare the approach on foot, parking or taxi access, air conditioning for warm weather and whether breakfast fits your intended departure. Those practical differences matter more on a short trip than collecting a different hotel style every night.
