Driving in Albania: When a Rental Car Helps
A car gives reach beyond the towns, but calls for clear rental terms, time for the road and a parking plan for every stay.

Decide from the route
Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër may work by bus if the services fit your dates. A car adds more on dispersed beaches, rural stays and independent stops. Parking in an old town and a vehicle left unused during a mountain hike count too.

Read the rental contract as part of the itinerary
Before paying, check licence and additional document rules for your nationality. Compare deposit, excess, damage exclusions, breakdown cover, additional driver, mileage and return procedure. For a border crossing or ferry, get written permission and insurance cover.

At collection, document the car
Photograph the bodywork, wheels, tyres, glass, interior, fuel level and mileage. Have new damage recorded before leaving. Save breakdown contacts, contract, route and return address offline.
Allow fewer kilometres per day than the fastest map time suggests. Away from cities, surface, roadworks, traffic and lighting vary; plan unfamiliar rural and mountain legs in daylight.

Ask for the parking address, not only the hotel address
In Berat or Gjirokastër, the entrance may be up a steep street a vehicle cannot reach. Ask for the exact parking and luggage drop-off point, cost and walking distance. Do the same on the coast, where an attractive map pin can hide a difficult approach.
If you return to Tirana after a busy coast stay, protect the day for the drive and vehicle return. Arrange the flight transfer after those steps.
If you break down or have an accident
Follow the police, rental-company and insurer instructions and record what happened. The FCDO advises staying at an accident scene until police arrive. Make sure all drivers have the rental and insurance contact numbers.
If nobody in your group is comfortable with the driving, simplify the route. A town-and-coast trip with one arranged transfer can work better than a car for the whole holiday.
