Berat’s value is the relationship between the inhabited castle quarter, Ottoman-era neighbourhoods and the river, not one viewpoint. An overnight stay gives the upper town early or late light and removes the pressure to carry luggage over cobbles at midday.
Choose the area by mobility
Mangalem is atmospheric and steep; Gorica is quieter across the river; flatter central streets simplify luggage and bus access. Drivers should ask for exact parking instructions before entering narrow historic approaches.
One full day
Visit the castle quarter when heat and groups are lighter, allow time for the Onufri Museum if open, then walk the river neighbourhoods slowly. Pair the town with local food or a verified countryside visit rather than adding another city the same day.
Berat needs one upper-town block and one riverside block
Treat Berat Castle as a lived-in upper quarter, not a quick viewpoint. The Onufri Museum, church interiors and lanes require more time than the climb suggests. Later, use the Osum river as the organising line between Mangalem, Gorica Bridge and the quieter Gorica side.
A single rushed afternoon often means climbing at the hottest time and seeing the riverside only after dark. Two nights create one full day without forcing the castle, museums and dinner into the same window.

Choose the quarter around luggage and sleep
Mangalem gives atmosphere below the castle but includes steep or uneven approaches. Gorica is quieter across the river and adds a bridge crossing to the central side. The flatter modern centre is less romantic but can be easier with wheeled luggage, a car or an early departure.
Ask the property for the final walking or driving instructions. A map pin inside the historic zone does not show stairs, narrow access or whether parking belongs to the property.

The onward route determines whether Berat fits
Berat works naturally between Tirana and southern Albania. It is less helpful as a one-night detour on a route already overloaded with the Alps and Riviera. Bus travellers should verify the exact onward departure; drivers should leave daylight for the southern road and avoid treating the transfer as a sightseeing day.
If only one stone city fits, choose Berat for a compact river-and-castle rhythm. Choose Gjirokastër for the deeper southern route and a broader twentieth-century museum layer.
