Two towns, not interchangeable stops
Berat and Gjirokastër share a UNESCO World Heritage inscription. They do not offer identical visits. Berat has an inhabited castle quarter and neighbourhoods beside the Osum; Gjirokastër has a steep old town and distinctive houses. Choose by how you want to spend your time and how the stop connects with the rest of your trip.

Choose Berat to keep a short trip focused
On a short trip from Tirana, Berat can be the main destination in its own right. Divide a full day between the castle quarter and the lower neighbourhoods, rather than repeatedly going up and down. Ask whether luggage can be dropped at your accommodation before arriving.
One night may work for a deliberately short stop. It is not the same experience as two: arrival, parking or a bus-terminal transfer and check-out all use some of the time available.
Choose Gjirokastër when the south is already in your plan
Gjirokastër gives you more to work with when you visit a historic house as well as the castle and bazaar. Save those visits for a day without an onward transfer. Establish how you will reach your hotel; a memorable address high in the old town may mean a difficult arrival with suitcases.
Combine the city with the coast or Përmet only when the actual journeys fit your calendar. Being in the same broad southern region does not make a destination a quick extra outing.
When visiting both makes sense
Four nights split between the two towns give you one complete day in each. Our seven- and ten-day itineraries use that allocation. If you have only two nights spare, choose one town rather than letting two sets of arrival logistics absorb the visit.
With limited mobility, select accommodation before committing to an appealing view of a neighbourhood. Ask about steps, the distance from the drop-off point and the room’s location. Neither historic centre can be declared generally easy to access from a photograph.
