When do both towns fit your itinerary?
Berat and Gjirokastër can work as successive stays while travelling through the south. Treat the connection as a moving day: checkout, bags, terminal access and the final approach all sit outside the intercity ride. A published journey of a few hours does not leave a full visiting day at both ends.
Our practical starting choice is two nights in each town if you want a full day in both. With one Gjirokastër night, visiting time depends heavily on arrival and onward travel. If choosing just one town, use the separate Berat-or-Gjirokastër comparison; this guide concentrates on organising the connection.

What has been established about the bus?
The reviewed Gjirafa card lists Argjiro SH.P.K, Berat Station to Gjirokaster Station, 14:00–17:00 and €11.50. The retrieved list shows 5 November 2026. Treat this as a dated booking example, then select your own date and direction. It does not establish that this is the only local bus or that the service remains available every future day.
Generic text on the same page describes a longer journey than the card. We do not combine the figures into a new timetable. Visit Gjirokastra also lists the operator, but its page is undated; older prices are not used as current walk-up fares. Save your actual operator, departure pin, luggage conditions and contact details.
From your Berat room to the intercity terminal
Arrange terminal access before checkout. Ask for a reachable pickup point at your accommodation and coordinate bag collection with the bus. The Berat tourism page describes an intercity terminal beyond the old town but dates its transport information to December 2022. Its old times and fares are unsuitable as current instructions.
A final morning walk can fit if bags are arranged and you avoid leaving terminal access until the last moment. Do not assume a pickup inside Mangalem or Gorica. Use the selected service’s map pin and show it to your local driver. For a hillside stay, include getting the luggage down from the room.
Arriving in Gjirokastër: allow for the hillside
The old town climbs a hill; a lower-town bus arrival is different from reaching a room by the Old Bazaar. Gjirokaster Station on a service card does not establish a fixed short walk to every hotel. Send your actual arrival pin to the property and ask for an approach suitable for your bags.
For a taxi, obtain a reachable drop-off rather than only a hotel name. Ask about the last walking stretch, cobbles and steps to your selected room. With children or reduced mobility, assess that specific route. When driving, establish unloading and where the car stays afterwards; navigating to the town alone does not resolve either.

When might a car or transfer work better?
If you already have a rental car for the wider trip, compare the full drive with the bus and both terminal journeys. Choosing your departure can help when planning a deliberate stop, but a detour also adds time. Use a current route calculation for your selected road and add breaks. The published bus duration is not an established driving time.
For a private ride, agree the pickup address, time, people, bags, destination and total price. Specify the duration and extra charge for an intermediate stop. Have the driver and hotel agree the same drop-off if the entrance cannot be reached by car. Do not treat an old travel account’s transfer price as a current quote.
Back to Berat or onwards towards Saranda?
Check the reverse direction independently. The local operator listing distinguishes outward and return departure times, so assuming matching times in both directions is a poor starting point. Recheck the next departure place and date for onward travel too. Reaching Gjirokastër does not establish a connecting ticket to Saranda.
Allocate nights before adding stops. Two Gjirokastër nights provide arrival and a full visiting day; one may suit a deliberately shorter visit. If continuing to the coast, give that move its own place in the itinerary. - Choose the date, direction and service, then save both stop locations offline.
- Arrange luggage storage and transport to the right terminal in Berat.
- Send the Gjirokastër arrival pin and ask about drop-off, walking and steps.
- Check ticket price, luggage and payment for your own journey.
- Avoid a museum booking, onward ride or excursion that depends on minute-perfect arrival.
