The best area depends on how you arrive
For a first visit, we would start around the Old Bazaar: the historic core becomes your base for walks and meals. Palorto is a useful alternative if staying in a traditional house higher in town is part of the attraction. The lower town deserves consideration when an early bus, heavy luggage or a brief overnight stop matters more than spending every evening in the old centre.
Gjirokastër does not have one flat city centre. The old town occupies the hillside and the newer town lies in the valley; city tourism describes steep cobbled streets. A hotel close to the bazaar on a map can still involve a demanding final climb. Choose the area first, then examine the actual address, entrance and room. An attractive terrace photograph tells you little about carrying your suitcase there.

Compare the three areas
| Area | Best fit | Booking trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Old Bazaar / Çerçiz Topulli | First visit, with the historic core and meals as your starting point | Ask about drop-off, room position and any steps. |
| Palorto and upper old-town lanes | Traditional-house settings higher on the hill | Allow for the daily climb; views and balconies belong to specific rooms. |
| Lower town / Bulevardi 18 Shtatori | Bus logistics, onward travel or a deliberately lower address | Reaching old-town sights requires an uphill walk or local transport. |

Old Bazaar: our starting point for a first stay
The Old Bazaar is the historic core of narrow shopping streets and routes into different parts of the old town. On a short cultural stop, it is useful to unpack and go out without organising another transport leg. Search beyond a generic “central” label: compare the entrance with the bazaar and Çerçiz Topulli Square.
A central position does not establish quiet surroundings or a level approach. Ask which way the room faces if an early night matters, and have the hotel explain where a driver can actually stop. An entrance on a pedestrian lane and parking elsewhere may work perfectly well once you understand the walk. After a late bus, confirmed reception is more useful than a theoretically short distance on a map.

Palorto: choose the house and its approach together
Palorto is worth comparing when a traditional house is an important part of the stay. You are choosing an upper old-town setting rather than automatically the easiest arrival address. Examine the route to the bazaar and back: you will make that return journey after dinner too.
Hotel Kalemi is a concrete example at Rruga Bashkim Kokona 14. The city listing describes a traditional property and explicitly states that upper floors are accessible by stairs only. This does not make it less attractive, but changes the decision for anyone with a pushchair, substantial luggage or difficulty using steps. Have any balcony, view and the floor of your particular room confirmed in writing.

Lower town: useful transport logistics, with a deliberate city trip
The area around Bulevardi 18 Shtatori may suit travellers whose arrival or onward journey takes priority. City tourism places the intercity bus area by the main road and describes local transport between old and new town. A lower room can simplify luggage handling, provided the actual property suits your stop.
Send the arrival pin from your booked bus to the property. Ask how you will reach the old town the next morning and return afterwards. “Lower town” does not universally mean step-free access, quiet rooms or free parking. For a first two-night cultural stay, we would normally compare the historic core first; for one short night before an early onward journey, a practical lower address can be the better choice.

With a car, unloading and parking are separate questions
Underground parking was built beneath the renewed Çerçiz Topulli Square. The government completion report confirms the facility, but does not establish a current tariff, an available space or lift access to your accommodation. A parking icon is therefore not proof that you can drive your cases to the hotel door.
Ask for arrival instructions covering the reachable drop-off point, where to unload, where the car stays afterwards and the remaining walk. Avoid an unsuitable lane simply because navigation selects the shortest line. Without a car, use the same principle: agree one drop-off point with both taxi and hotel. If the final approach uses steps, ask beforehand whether help with luggage is possible.

Four properties to compare purposefully
| Property | What its own or city source describes | Question for your room |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel Kalemi — Palorto | Bashkim Kokona 14; upper floors accessible only by stairs | Which floor, how many steps and where can I be dropped off? |
| Hotel Palorto — Rruga Ismail Kadare | Garden/terrace and shared spaces; listing states no cots or extra beds | Does the room fit the whole family, and what parking is actually available? |
| Hotel Argjiro — Çerçiz Topulli / Old Bazaar | Own website gives Rruga Gjin Zenebisi, a restaurant and private parking | Where is the parking, and how do I reach the booked room? |
| Stone City Hostel — Rruga Alqi Kondi | City listing describes dormitories, private rooms and a shared kitchen | Which room and bathroom, what arrival time and payment method? |

How to use these property examples
These are real addresses to compare, rather than personally tested favourites or a ranking. The sources establish identities and described features; rates, availability and the condition of your room have not been checked live. Hotel Kalemi and Kalemi 2 are different properties: confirm the full name and address.
For families, the actual room occupancy matters more than a broad “family hotel” category. At Palorto, pay particular attention to the listing’s cot and extra-bed conditions. In a hostel, deliberately choose between a dormitory and a private room and check whether the bathroom is shared. A listed feature can be room-specific or have changed. Ask about the details that would actually determine your booking.

One or two nights, and what changes by season?
One night can work for a deliberately short visit when you have enough time before check-in or after check-out. Two nights are our calmer starting point: an arrival evening, one full day for the castle and old town, and a separate onward travel day. A delayed bus then need not displace your main visit.
In warmer weather, clarify cooling and room orientation; for a cooler-season stay, ask how the booked room is heated. A photogenic stone house does not establish its indoor comfort. Check breakfast hours before an early departure and cancellation terms if your route still depends on transport. Give a Blue Eye visit its own block of time en route or as an outing, rather than making it compulsory within an already short city day.
Five questions that make a booking concrete
- Can you assess my arrival pin and show where the taxi or car can stop?
- How much walking, cobbled ground and stair climbing separates drop-off, entrance and this particular room?
- Is parking private or public, reserved or subject to availability, and is there an extra charge?
- Which beds, bathroom, cooling or heating are included in the room I am selecting?
- Can I check in at my arrival time, and how do we handle bags before check-in or after check-out?
Frequently asked questions
Which area is most convenient for a first visit?
Start around the Old Bazaar and Çerçiz Topulli Square if you want to explore the historic core on foot. Then check the actual entrance and room. An old-town position does not automatically mean access without slopes or stairs.
Can I stay in Gjirokastër without a hire car?
Yes. Plan intercity transport and a separate final approach. Do not treat the bus arrival and hotel entrance as the same place: the old town is higher. Discuss your arrival pin and any taxi with the property.
Can I book somewhere with parking?
Properties advertise parking, but ask what kind of space, availability, charges and room access are involved. Public parking near the square is different from a reserved hotel space. Current arrangements determine which option is practical.
What matters with heavy bags or limited mobility?
Have the exact route to the selected room described, including steps, surfaces and any lift. Request photographs or a short access video where useful. Consider a lower address or an easier drop-off; an area name or hotel category is not an accessibility statement.
