This guide sets no nationwide tipping percentage.

Ask how an extra payment reaches the intended person.

Start with the bill

Read the total before rounding up or leaving money. Ask about an unfamiliar supplement and whether the bill covers the entire table. An optional tip and a charge already on the bill are different things. A short question is more useful than an assumption about local custom.

We have not established a current official nationwide tipping guideline. We therefore do not present a percentage as an Albanian rule. The choices below help make payment clear rather than describing what every member of staff expects.

Choose an amount you understand

If you want to round up, calculate the difference first. A bill of 2,800 lek paid with 3,000 lek leaves an additional 200 lek. This is an arithmetic example, not a current restaurant price or recommendation for a customary tip.

For card payments, ask whether an extra amount is possible and how it is processed. If you want to thank someone personally, ask how best to do that. Do not assume that an amount entered on a terminal is automatically paid to a particular worker.

Guides, drivers and group contributions

In a group, agree whether everyone decides individually or one person pays on behalf of the group. Record what has already been paid for the activity. This helps prevent an included service being collected again as an extra.

Any required charge should be clear before booking. Ask the supplier to explain an unexpected amount. Adding a larger tip is not a way to resolve an unclear bill.

Keep lek and euros distinct

Keep the bill, payment and change in the same currency in your notes. If paying euros against a lek bill, ask what conversion is being used. The Bank of Albania reference rate is a comparison, not a compulsory till rate. The payment guide covers cash and card costs in more detail.
