Choose bases around your actual travel day

Compare Tirana, Berat, Shkodër and Sarandë by what you want to do and the connection you need next. A choice of rooms and outings only helps if your particular address works. Check the entrance, stop and walking route before booking.

Give a travel day one main movement. A bus followed by an uncertain rural connection requires more preparation than arriving directly at a town base. Use the public-transport guide to check the departure location, operator and final approach.

Make your first arrival work without mobile data

Save your accommodation name, full address and phone number offline. Agree how to enter if reception is closed. Alongside the chosen transport, record an alternative: who can you call and which payment method is available?

The airport publishes bus information and links to eTransport. Check the service you actually need: city centre, bus terminal and hotel are different destinations. A late flight is a good reason to keep the first overnight stop straightforward.

Price the trip for one traveller

An entire room or private transfer does not automatically cost less when you travel alone. Compare a private room, a shared-room bed and a group outing using the conditions that apply to you. Choose a shared activity for a suitable programme or company, rather than only because the private version costs more.

For a day trip, confirm the meeting point, return arrangements and minimum participation. Ask what happens if the minimum is not met. Do not leave the journey from the drop-off back to your own room unresolved.

Keep a usable backup

  • Agree with someone at home when you will make contact and what to do if you do not respond. Share itinerary changes.
  • Keep another payment option and essential details separate from your everyday phone and wallet.
  • Identify alternative accommodation for an awkward arrival. Do not share payment codes or document copies with strangers offering help.
  • For a remote walk, establish what local guidance and communication are needed. Travelling solo does not mean every activity should be undertaken alone.

When the day changes

After a delay, a simpler overnight stop can be more practical than trying to preserve every planned connection. Call the property before arrival and tell your contact at home what changed. Use official travel advice for current risks and assistance. The FCDO solo-travel guidance supports preparation; it does not assess an individual Albanian hotel or journey.
