Stay in Shkodër when the route gives it enough time to become a place rather than a break. Skip it when it creates two long transfer days in a row. Choose the nearest regional hub when flexibility matters more than atmosphere.
Shkodër is a city stay, not a transfer receipt
Use the pedestrian centre, Marubi National Museum of Photography and the approach to Rozafa Castle as three different layers: contemporary street life, visual history and the older strategic landscape. Lake Shkodër adds a fourth, but it needs a route and transport choice rather than the vague instruction to ‘see the lake’.
Two nights work before the Alps because one full day remains even after confirming transfers. A single late-arrival night turns the city into luggage storage and leaves no recovery room if mountain transport changes.

Make the mountain chain one booking problem
Confirm Shkodër pickup, Theth or Valbona accommodation, luggage handling and the return path together. A guesthouse can often clarify the practical chain, but the traveller still needs the operator, date and meeting point in writing.
Do not arrive from the south at night and expect to solve an early mountain departure at breakfast. Keep a city night on both sides of a weather-sensitive route when the international departure cannot move.

Choose the city even without a hike
Shkodër still earns a place for photography, northern food, cycling scale and access to the lake. Travellers who do not hike can pair it with a village stay in Theth only when road transfers are comfortable, or keep a two- to three-night city base and take one carefully verified excursion.
Skip it on a short south-focused week. Adding Shkodër solely because it is famous creates a cross-country transfer without enough time for the north.
