The Albanian Alps: Theth, Valbona, Shkodër and the Koman Route
Treat the north as one connected logistics chain. Weather, transfers, luggage and route direction matter before the famous hike or ferry photograph.

See & do
Use Shkodër as a city, not a depot
Spend time in the pedestrian centre, at Rozafa Castle or by Lake Shkodër before the mountain departure. The city gives northern history and food context, provides equipment and allows the current transfer to be reconfirmed without betting an international arrival on it.
For non-hikers and limited mobility
The north still offers guesthouse meals, village landscape and shorter outings, but road access, steps, slopes and uneven paths remain material. Ask a host for exact door-to-door access and vehicle availability. Do not interpret ‘easy walk’ as step-free.
The north works for non-hikers too
Shkodër, Theth village, shorter valley walks and guesthouse meals can form a meaningful three- to five-night northern chapter. The test is transport comfort: a long winding transfer may not be worth it for one photograph or a single night.
Outside the reliable high-mountain season, consider Korçë and Lake Ohrid for an eastern landscape-and-food chapter rather than presenting the same Alps plan all year.
How much time do you need?
Nights and direction
Allow two Shkodër nights and at least three in the mountain chapter. A through-route usually needs more. Do not place the return on flight day. Drivers should avoid leaving a rental where the through-hike cannot return them to it; organised transfers are often the cleaner answer.
Where to stay
An available room says nothing about trail conditions.
Choose simple base or through-route
A Theth base is the lower-friction first visit: one transfer in, one guesthouse and room to choose a walk by weather. The Valbona–Theth crossing is a mountain hike and leaves you in a different valley, so luggage and onward transport must be solved as part of the route.
The Koman ferry corridor can be beautiful and logistically demanding. Confirm the road transfers on both sides, the actual boat or ferry product, luggage and arrival connection as one chain.

This shortlist spans location and comfort. Euro signs are a relative price band only, checked 2 September 2026. Enter your dates for the current total. Compare cancellation terms, included taxes, payment timing and access to the exact address. Also check recent feedback on noise, hot water, air conditioning and parking; these practical details vary by room and season and often matter more than the lowest displayed nightly rate.
| Name | Area | Price band | Strong point | Watch for | Best for | Check |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Tradita | south of the pedestrian centre | €€ | traditional setting with an on-site restaurant | decide whether atmosphere or absolute centrality matters more | Travellers balancing location and comfort | View accommodation |
| Bujtina Tinari Theth | central Theth valley | €€ | guesthouse format close to the valley’s main sights | seasonal access and transfer times still govern the stay | Travellers balancing location and comfort | View accommodation |
| Vidis Chalet Boutique Hotel | hillside above Theth | €€€ | small higher-comfort option with valley views | the hillside position is less convenient without arranged transport | Travellers who value extra comfort | View accommodation |
Getting there & around
Koman and Valbona: three separate journey legs
The chain is Shkodër → Koman by road, Koman → Fierzë by boat and Fierzë → Valbona by road. Ferry Berisha publishes departures from Koman at 09:00 and Fierzë at 13:00. The cash foot-passenger fare is €10 / ALL 1000; land transfers are separate components.
The website lists inconsistent online prices and season start dates. Confirm the complete package for your date. If you then walk to Theth, arrange luggage and transport from the other valley; leaving a rental car at the starting point does not solve that return journey.

Practical preparation
Hiking, weather and safety
Current trail condition, snow, heat, storms and rescue information outrank a fixed itinerary. Carry offline navigation, water, layers and suitable footwear; share the plan and turn back when the day changes. A popular route is not automatically easy or supported.
Travel insurance must match the altitude and activity. Use a qualified local guide when navigation, conditions or group experience justify one.
Mountain safety begins before the trail
Check official and local conditions, daylight, footwear, water, navigation and the turnaround point. A popular trail is still mountain terrain. Insurance must cover the activity, and a guide is worth considering when conditions, experience or route-finding confidence do not match.
Keep one day that can change purpose. If rain or cloud removes the hike, use village-scale walks, guesthouse time or return safely; do not force a crossing because the next hotel is prepaid.
