At a glance

First mountain stop?
Start with one base in Theth and a suitable day walk. Crossing the pass is optional.
Walking the crossing?
Theth–Valbona is point to point. Coordinate both overnight stops, luggage and onward transport.
Limited time from Tirana?
Consider Dajti around the upper station. A summit hike is a separate plan requiring further assessment.

Compare four walking options

Choose how much you want to walk and where you want to finish. A transfer can change the walking portion; a point-to-point crossing changes the overnight route. This is a planning comparison, not a difficulty grading based on current trail inspection.

Theth–Valbona: a crossing, not a loop

A stony walking path beside pines and limestone slopes at Valbona Pass

Peaks of the Balkans lists 13.9 km, about 7 hours and +1,068 / −792 metres for Theth centre to Fusha e Gjes Hotel. Its description puts Valbonë centre another 3.5 km beyond that point. Establish your own endpoint: these are not universal door-to-door figures. The source includes observations from 2011 and does not confirm current facilities or trail conditions.

Ask both stays for exact map pins, establish where your walk finishes and arrange the remaining approach to your room. Do not accidentally turn a crossing into a return hike to collect a parked car. Walking both ways is a separate, more demanding plan.

  • Confirm the actual route variant and conditions with the park administration or a local mountain guide.
  • Arrange luggage storage or transport separately; a transfer reservation does not automatically cover a larger bag.
  • Agree what happens to rooms and transport if the crossing cannot go ahead.

Grunas waterfall: a shorter goal from Theth

Grunas is an option when you want to stay in the same valley and return to your own guesthouse. The tourism authority gives a broad walking time from “Theth village” without a precise starting point. That is insufficient for a total return time from every property.

Ask your host to show the route from your address and discuss the final climb, surface and return. A shorter walk is not automatically appropriate in slippery conditions or for every walker. Keep the rest of the day flexible rather than squeezing the waterfall between fixed transfers.

Theth’s Blue Eye: establish the starting point

The Blue Eye of Kaprre near Theth is a different destination from the well-known spring in southern Albania. Local operator Thethi Guide distinguishes walking all the way from Theth from driving to Nderlysa (Ndërlysaj) and walking from there. Ask exactly which starting point and walking section a “Blue Eye” outing includes.

To reduce the walking portion, discuss transport to Ndërlysaj and the return journey in advance. Confirm a meeting point and what happens if you are delayed. A photograph or destination name does not define a short excursion: the trip from your guesthouse may be a very different day.

Dajti: nature from a Tirana base

Dajti may fit when you are staying in Tirana without a separate Alps chapter. The cable car operator describes walking around the upper station and surrounding forest. That is a more limited choice than an independent summit hike.

The same operator recommends independent summit hiking only for experienced walkers with excellent navigation. Ask which walk suits the day. Check the operating day, final descent and transport back to your hotel; allow a margin before the last cable car.

When to hike: choose by route, not just month

An accessible guesthouse does not establish whether the pass is suitable for walking. In replies dated 28 May and 2 June 2026, park authority AKZM still warned of remaining snow and a winter route through an avalanche area at Valbona Pass. This is a dated example, not a report of conditions today.

Shortly before departure, check the exact route, snow or ice, forecast and available daylight. Ask which conditions require cancellation. If the pass is unsuitable, adapt the stay in Theth or Shkodër instead. Do not force a crossing to preserve a reservation.

Coordinate transport, luggage and overnight stops

Ferry Berisha publishes a Shkodër–Theth transfer using Hotel Rozafa and Mini Market Jezerca as reference points. This does not promise a drop-off at every guesthouse. The website gives differing departure times: use the confirmation for your date and arrange the final approach to your room.

For the other valley, the operator publishes a Shkodër–Koman–Fierzë–Valbonë chain. Confirm every leg for your date, including seasonal operation and connections. The reverse direction may also fit; a room reservation does not confirm a boat or minibus.

  • This is an editorial itinerary, not a package or guaranteed timetable. Add a mountain night as a weather margin where needed.
  • Agree where the larger bag stays and what you carry. Check meals and early breakfast separately.
  • Allow a separate overnight margin toward the airport before an international flight; the table does not guarantee a flight connection.

Where should you stay for your mountain plan?

Choose the journey before the room. Compare the map pin with your transfer and trail start; an available room does not confirm a suitable trail.

On the other side of the pass

Valbonë

For a crossing, the distance between the end of your walk and your room matters. Establish the endpoint before choosing.

What to pack and agree before leaving

Match equipment to the actual walk and forecast. Discuss grippy footwear, layers, rain and sun protection, food, adequate water, a headlamp and a charged phone with an offline map. Do not rely on old descriptions of cafés or water sources.

Share the route and expected return with your accommodation and agree who acts if you are overdue. Save 112 and insurer details offline. Check cover for the activity and possible rescue; ordinary travel insurance does not automatically cover every mountain plan.

  • Ask a guide about relevant experience, route variant, group size, turnaround criteria and cancellation.
  • Respect signs, private land and local access rules. Take waste back with you.
  • A route file helps preparation but does not replace a current assessment of the terrain.

Frequently asked questions about hiking in Albania

Short planning answers
QuestionAnswer
Do I have to cross to Valbona to visit Theth? No. Staying in one base with suitable day walks and returning to the same guesthouse is a separate option.
Is 13.9 km the distance between every hotel in Theth and Valbona? No. The published stage finishes at Fusha e Gjes Hotel; your own start and finish determine additional distance.
Can I fit the crossing into one mountain night? You also need arrival, both valleys and onward travel to work. Plan the complete journey, not just the walking day.
Do I need a guide? It depends on route, conditions and experience. Seek local advice; snow or an unfamiliar route variant should not be treated as a routine independent outing.
Which overnight stop should I book first?Establish the walking plan and workable transfers, then coordinate accommodation addresses and terms.
