Korçë & Lake Ohrid works when it has a defined role in the route. The aim is not to collect another pin, but to understand what this stop contributes that the previous one could not.

Route friction
Check the real departure point, parking approach, terrain and seasonal opening pattern before arrival. The last few kilometres and the first hour with luggage often matter more than the headline journey time.
Worth it for you?
Stay in Korçë & Lake Ohrid when the route gives it enough time to become a place rather than a break. Skip it when it creates two long transfer days in a row. Choose the nearest regional hub when flexibility matters more than atmosphere.
Give city and lake separate jobs
Korçë works for the Old Bazaar, National Museum of Medieval Art and an evening city rhythm. Pogradec and the Albanian shore of Lake Ohrid provide a separate water-and-landscape day. Sleeping in one and repeatedly commuting to the other saves no packing if it creates uncertain returns.
Use at least three nights for a combined eastern chapter: two in Korçë and one by the lake, or the reverse according to weather and onward route.

This is the strong non-beach alternative
The east can make more sense than the Riviera in cooler months, when a visitor wants museums, food and city evenings rather than an uncertain beach product. Winter conditions still affect roads and daylight; ‘works outside summer’ does not mean ‘needs no checking’.
Korçë also works as a replacement for an unsuitable Alps chapter. It does not replicate high-mountain hiking, but it preserves a regional journey rather than leaving three unplanned nights.
Keep Lake Ohrid and border plans distinct
UNESCO’s Ohrid region crosses a national boundary, but a heritage listing does not make a border crossing operationally simple. If continuing to North Macedonia, check documents, rental permission, insurance and current transport separately.
For an Albania-only trip, one lake day can be complete without crossing. Avoid using an international extension to compensate for an already overfilled route.
