Responsible Travel During Albania’s Tourism Growth

Spend in ways that support places without pretending every locally branded product is automatically responsible.

At a glance

Stay longer in fewer places, respect access boundaries and ask who operates an activity. A local label alone says little about how it is run.

Stay longer in fewer places

Use fewer bases and longer stays to reduce transfer load and create room for ordinary local businesses.

Respect local boundaries

Respect protected-area rules, water limits, waste systems and private beach or agricultural boundaries.

Assess the operator

Ask who owns and delivers a tour, what group size means for the place and how wildlife or river access is managed.

Take photographs without crossing boundaries

Avoid geotagging fragile informal access points and never enter construction, military or private land for a photograph.

Questions before committing to an activity

An unanswered point is a reason to ask more or choose another activity. These questions help a decision; they are not certification of an operator.

  • Who delivers the activity and who is responsible on site?
  • What access is permitted, and who manages the land or river location?
  • How is waste handled and where can you get drinking water without straining local facilities?
  • Will the activity change if weather, terrain or group size requires it?

Turn good intentions into booking questions

A guesthouse, guide or excursion can describe itself as local or sustainable without explaining what that means. Ask who actually provides the service, how many people will join, what is included and who makes decisions on the day. Compare concrete answers rather than labels.

For example, when choosing an outing from Përmet, ask where it takes place and who manages that access. For a mountain stay, ask how transfers and meals are organised before booking several separate journeys. These questions help you select a service; they do not certify an operator or establish a measurable environmental benefit.

Fewer bases, more useful time in each place

Start with the nights you have and the route you genuinely want. Staying longer in Berat, Gjirokastër or one coastal base leaves more time to use neighbourhood shops and restaurants instead of spending each day packing. It also makes it easier to change a day trip without losing the whole itinerary.

This is an editorial preference, not a claim that every longer stay has lower emissions. Transport type, distance, group size and accommodation all matter. Compare the actual journeys before adding a remote stop simply because it is marketed as an escape from the crowds.

Protected status is not permission to enter

AKZM is the national protected-area authority and works with regional administrations. Use the responsible manager’s information when a plan involves a protected area. A tourism description or a map pin does not establish permission for camping, vehicles, fires, drones or access to a riverbank.

Ask about the specific place and activity. If permission or the boundary is unclear, choose an established alternative. Follow signs, avoid disturbing animals and take your rubbish out where collection is unavailable. Do not enter farmland or private courtyards to reach a photograph.

A practical checklist for your ordinary day

The aim is a trip that respects the place and the people living there. Start with decisions you can actually check: the length of your stay, the journeys you book, the access you use and the questions you ask.

  • Ask where drinking water can be obtained safely; do not assume every tap or spring is suitable.
  • Use towels, cooling and water thoughtfully, and follow the accommodation’s local arrangements.
  • Ask before taking identifiable photographs of people or publishing the location of a sensitive site.
  • Keep receipts and clear booking terms. A personal recommendation does not replace knowing who supplies the service.
  • Allow time for a local meal or a neighbourhood walk without expecting residents to perform a tourist experience.
